Hough High school’s varsity soccer team had an incredibly dominant performance over West Mecklenburg on October 12, 2026. Before the game, Hough stood with a 11-6-3 record, with eleven wins, six losses, and three draws. West Mecklenburg had a record of 3-14 before the game. The Huskies ended the game with an outstanding shutout game score of 9-0! The nine goals can be attributed to the team’s chemistry, strong offense, and teamwork. Not only did the Huskies have a memorable match, but it was also their senior night, meaning that the team acknowledged and celebrated their eleven seniors for their hard work and effort that they have put in over the years. They not only acknowledged the graduating student-athletes, but also recognized the sacrifices and time the parents have made to support their kids.
After the recognition of Hough’s seniors, the match got underway against West Mecklenburg at 6 pm. Both teams held their ground pretty effectively. Hough had a few chances to score, and West Mecklenburg had a few breakaways that were swiftly shut down by Hough’s defense. Hough had several promising chances and kept the ball moving around efficiently in West Meck’s side of the field. These promising chances were blocked by West Meck’s goalkeeper, who really had an outstanding game despite the score. He had an ample number of saves in the first half, keeping Hough out of their own goal for many of the early minutes. Then, in the 29th minute, one of Hough’s senior forwards, Calen Smith (12), scored a breathtaking opening goal, setting the score at 1-0 and generating applause from the home crowd. Now, keep in mind West Mecklenburg was coming from a loss of 7-1 to Chambers and a loss of 11-0 to Myers Park, so fighting back against Hough’s potent offense for 30 minutes or so was pretty surprising. The first goal set off a chain reaction that led to Hough scoring three more goals before the half ended from Landen Roper (11), Ignacio Guzman (12), Nicholas Earle (12), Caleb Smith (12), and Lukas Patrignani (12).
In the second half of the game, with the score now being 4-0, the West Meck Hawks’ morale was diminishing. The two teams contested for several minutes before Hough scored another goal, putting the Husky squad up 5. The team was keeping high pressure on the Hawks side of the field, with Ignacio Guzman (Hough) making several really good plays and assists. Although Hough kept scoring repeatedly, the Hawks goalkeeper continued to put up an admirable performance.
After a short four minutes, Hough sent another ball into the back of the net, leading the game 6-0. The game was still not over yet. Hough was still hungry for more goals, and they scored again and again. With Hough’s strong offensive determination, the score was now an astonishing 9-0! In less than 20 minutes, the Huskies had scored an extraordinary four goals! Keep in mind, a standard high school soccer game is 80 minutes long, split between two halves. Hough stood at 9-0 for a few minutes and scored again with about 10 minutes left in the game. The score was not updated to 10-0 because the ref ended the game under the mercy rule since the Huskies had a ten-goal lead after the half.
Players exchange handshakes after the match.
In sum, Hough had a really strong, high-scoring game against West Meck. The match showcased Hough’s strong teamwork and ability to capitalize on good opportunities. Seniors Timi Soremekun (12) and Ignacio Guzman (12) delivered masterclass performances, with Soremekun scoring two goals and Guzman assisting three. Ultimately, Hough secured a 9-0 win and will carry that momentum into their coming playoff matches.
