Every Hough student knows about the myriad of clubs this school offers. From DECA to the Animal Awareness Club, almost every student can find a club that suits their interests and hobbies. However, many students may have ideas for amazing new clubs, but they don’t know how to start them. To raise awareness and inspire students to put their ideas into action, I spoke with Carsyn Poole (11), the founder and president of Cookies For a Cause. Cookies for a Cause is one of the amazing clubs at Hough. Members host bake sales and donate the proceeds to charities. As a member myself, I can say with certainty that Carsyn knows what she’s talking about and does an excellent job of running the club.
First things first, how did Carsyn even go about starting this club? When asked, she told me, “I collaborated with a teacher I felt close to, that I trusted, and felt fit to help with the club. We brainstormed some ideas which led to us starting the club.” Also, I wanted to know what inspired Carsyn to start the club. I asked that very thing, and she answered, “I love baking, and so does my advisor. That shared love led to the idea of selling baked goods to donate to good causes.”
To earn the profits this club donates, they host bake sales. Like me, you may be wondering how someone would even put on an event, like a bake sale, together. Carsyn told me, “We get together orders and brainstorm themes for our sales, which leads to the communication with Mrs. Phillips to get approved.” Another thing Carsyn told me is what she wants students to take away from each session. She said, “I hope they learn that even a little kindness goes a long way. No matter how big or small the act is, it can change someone’s life.”
Last but not least, I asked Carsyn if she had any words of advice for students who want to start their own club here at Hough. She answered with, “If you are determined and have the motivation to make a change, go for it. Don’t let anyone convince you not to. If you believe in something, do it.”
All in all, students shouldn’t feel afraid to put themselves out there and start a club. If you have an idea, go for it! If you don’t take that step, you could miss out on an incredible opportunity and a wonderful experience.
