Every student at Hough High School has that one class that makes the school day a little easier to get through. It’s the class where the teacher is genuinely invested, the material still feels relevant, and you don’t feel forced to participate. Sometimes it might just be the easiest class to get your teacher off topic, or it could be one where you are genuinely interested in the content. To better understand which classes students find most engaging, I interviewed students across multiple grade levels to identify a consensus on the most interesting courses offered at Hough.
One major factor students agreed on was the importance of the teacher. Amari Fulwiley (11) named AP Environmental Science as his most engaging class because of Mr. Arkfeld. This reinforces the idea that when a teacher is passionate, students are more willing to participate, even in more rigorous classes.
Forensics was another class that stood out. Senior Reagam Creely explained that the course covers topics related to death and crime that are often censored or overlooked in core classes, making the content feel more real and informative. Katelyn Gomez, a junior, added that she has never been bored in the class and is especially excited for interactive projects in the fingerprinting and serial killer units. It turns out learning is more interesting when worksheets and packets are replaced with hands-on investigations.
Several students, in addition to Amari, highlighted AP-level courses. Yulianna Hall (11) pointed to AP U.S. History, while Sydnie Dorfman (11) said both AP Environmental Science and AP Psychology were particularly engaging. Alyse Whitehurst (12) praised AP African American Studies for its focus on African American history, culture, and contributions, which deepened her understanding of social and political issues. On a more general scale, electives also earned recognition. Paolo Hernandez-Paris (12) highlighted the guitar class offered at Hough as a space that encourages creativity, where students are inspired by both their own progress and the talents of others.
Overall, the most engaging classes at Hough share common traits: passionate teachers, interactive learning, and content that feels meaningful. These courses prove that when education connects to students’ interests, learning becomes something to look forward to rather than avoid.
