Technology has become an inseparable part of our world today. It’s used to grow a business, spread ideas, and assist people in their daily lives. But one area where technology has seen a massive growth rate is in schools. The benefits of technology are simple: it helps teachers teach students more efficiently, shape how classrooms function, and makes things easier for everyone. However, there are still many concerns about the effect that technology has on society. Some people believe it is a distraction, while others think it is just unnecessary. Regardless of the risks or benefits, schools need to learn how to control and regulate technology to better support not only the students, but also staff, parents, and faculty.
Schools have seen an increase in technology use in recent years, but how to effectively use it is something that many schools still struggle with. “More than 70% of executives believe advancements in technology are happening faster than their workforce can incorporate them”, according to a report from a technology consulting company called Infosys. Hence, schools need to have clear and direct regulations for how technology should be used.
Firstly, technology should be used to improve a student’s education, not act as a replacement. There are many digital tools available that are beneficial, like virtual labs and educational apps. These appliances help support a teacher’s instruction. For example, Canvas is used in many schools and is used to grade assignments faster, keep track of work, and communicate with teachers more easily. However, regardless of how the technology is being applied, teachers should use it to enhance their teaching, but not as a substitute for the human interactions and knowledge that are essential to instruction.
Secondly, many personal devices, such as phones and laptops, are often seen as distractions from learning. Many schools have solved this issue by banning these devices or requiring students to place them in a specific area. However, this approach isn’t very effective. It is unrealistic and can encourage students to disobey rules. Instead, schools should create a clear framework for how, where, and when personal devices should be used.
Lastly, schools must focus on data privacy and digital equity in technology. With large amounts of data being collected, schools need to be able to protect and store it all to ensure the privacy of students and teachers. Schools have to be ethical and moral when it comes to dealing with the data of others. Additionally, some students might not have access to technology at home. When schools rely on technology heavily, it can create academic challenges for everyone involved. Therefore, if schools do decide to implement technology, they have to make sure that everyone has access so that it doesn't restrict a student’s education.
In conclusion, technology should be used to enrich learning and strengthen students' education in school. When used properly, technology should urge schools to achieve their primary goal in helping students thrive and succeed.
